Hawkers at Intersections

By admin - Posted on 21 August 2009

On a recent weekend I counted 19 hawkers at the Lord Charles/R44 intersection, waving flags and flowers and bits and bobs and generally getting in the way of road users.  When Law Enforcement officials swoop on them they scatter, only to regroup once the officials move off.  The only way we are going to get them to move permanently, is by NOT buying from them.  Don't even engage in a conversation with them, it will only encourage them to stick around.

The brightly coloured wire flowers are attractive, but the prospect of buying them at the intersection is not.  Maybe the Municipality could provide a venue for a marketplace where traders could exhibit their arts and crafts, there are no curio shops in Somerset West and one has to drive to Stellenbosch to buy a decent gift.

Hawkers at Intersections

I noted that these comments are a few years old. I travel past the intersection with Victoria and the N2 daily and still see at least 20 Hawkers selling goods(not all legal), and it worries me as this is a public road and they are doing more of a disservice than a service. I know that people at a market place pay a small amount for a spot to do their business. Why does the authorities allow this on a public road with the majority of them being illegal immagrants. What is metro, law inforcement and immigration doing about this?

The other day in broad daylight i saw one of them sell dagga to a motorist who flagged him down, this just seemed to be too regular. What about the j-walking law, can this be brought into affect?

Beggars at the inter-sections

An excellent idea. Then the informal traders at the post office can join them too. This might just go some way to resolve some of the problems at Busy Corner.

Is there no law against selling/begging at robots?
These days you have blind people, women with babies on their backs, kids, even a guy in a wheelchair and one on a crutch begging with cup in hand at the robots around Somerset West.
Weekends are especially bad.

This is dangerous to both beggar and driver and causes a great deal of frustration.
About a month ago we witnessed a mob of hawkers chasing a man from the Victoria/N2 robots all the way to the Somerset Mall where they eventually caught him outside Mr Price Home and started attacking him. There were about 12 attackers with various weapons (where they found them is a scary thought), one guy was even jumping on the victim's head!!

People just stood there looking on in shock.

A while back I remember only seeing the colourfull chap with various different suits standing at the Victoria/N2 robots waving and smiling at motorists. He sadly passed away and today we have chaos out there.

Hawkers at Intersections

After the growing number of complaints by residents regarding hawkers, it was very pleasing to see on Friday 20th November, two Metro Police Vehicles at the Victoria St/N2 intersection at about 13h00. The police were loading the hawkers into the back of their vans. It was a rare and welcoming experience to be able stop at the traffic lights without being accosted by the hawkers and not having to fear that criminals could be hiding amongst them, ready to grab whatever they can.

WELL DONE METRO LAW ENFORCEMENT!!
